Cryotherapy is done in a chamber (think walk-in freezer) where your entire body is exposed to cold temperatures of -110 to -124 F degrees for 3 to 6 minutes, depending on your goals and preference. Whole body cryotherapy is a very dry cold feeling. 

Cryotherapy is much more enjoyable than applying ice to your body for 10-15 minutes several times a day or doing ice baths. 

 

How does cryotherapy work? The extreme cold causes activates your nervous system and causes a physiological response. Everyone’s response will be different. However the extreme cold may help our bodies produce endorphins, hormones, and antioxidants. This may boost your mood, reduce pain, and inflammation. We recommend those with chronic pain, inflammation, or injury do at least 7 sessions within 14 days to determine if cryotherapy can help reduce your symptoms. You need to repetitively do sessions to boost the endorphins and hormone levels to achieve the results you need. 

Once your inflammation, injury, or other symptoms subside you can go into maintenance mode of 2-3 sessions/week depending on your needs. For those looking for general recovery after hard workouts, we recommend once a week or after hard training sessions or the next day to reduce delayed onset muscle soreness.
